What Do Any of Us Have Left When Words Fail Us? : A Look into Lyrics (OWLS Blog Tour)

I’ve been absent for quite some time now, and I’ve been discourteous enough to leave without a notice.
I will catch up on all posts soon, so no worries about that (If there were haha)

Anyhow, I’m back for the time being with another OWLS post. For those of you who don’t know who OWLS are, we are a group of anibloggers who strive to promote self respect and acceptance. To know more about OWLS, visit the official site.

This month’s wonderful topic is Melody. (Honestly, we have the best topics don’t we?) Before me Z-san wrote a fantastic post yesterday, so be sure to check it out here!
On the sixth, we have Zel-san so don’t miss that either!

In one way, music is form of healing and self-expression. For this month’s topic, we will be exploring some of our favorite musical pieces (anime/drama OSTs, movie soundtracks, music genres and etc.) and how it has impacted our lives and/or reasons why we enjoy listening to it.

I wasn’t really a music person to begin with. But I had always loved the way some words fit together. Be it a particular sentence or a book or even a fight, some words go well together, and the only way someone could explain that is abstractly- with more words that fit together.

I occasionally listened to instrumental music (because a cousin and two best friends at the time were really into music, like they sang and played instruments and stuff) and I used to imagine stories listening to the music.

Even now I always have a story for every song I listen to, albeit darker, more gory ones.
Essentially, for me, I value lyrics of songs or the emotions more than the actual music or tune of the song.

So when I found out that this month’s topic was Melody, I knew what I had to talk about- lyrics.
Exactly what will this post be about? Well, it’s one of those Auri Doesn’t Really Make Sense Posts, where everything is abstract and random. And long.
I want to talk about some of my favourite lyrics of all time and what they mean to me, but my thoughts are not quite clear, so I don’t blame you if you don’t make it to the end.

Some Lyrics Reach Your Heart and Rip it Out

The best type of songs, or worst, depending on how you look at it, are the ones that really hit home. Be it about lost friendship or self criticism, some songs just hurt you emotionally.

Is it you who changed?
(Is it you who changed?)
Or is it me?
(Or is it me?)
I hate even this moment that is passing by
I guess we are changed
Just like everyone you know

-Spring Day by BTS

I’ve talked at length about how BTS’ Spring Day was a song I related to before, but I cannot leave this opportunity to talk about how beautiful the lyrics of this song are. We’ve all had friends we have had to leave, or lose contact with and Suga and RM (from BTS) did an amazing job as always expressing these complicated feelings.

The tomorrow we’ve been waiting
for becomes the name of yesterday at some point
Tomorrow becomes today, today becomes yesterday,
tomorrow becomes yesterday and is behind me
Life isn’t about living along but living through
As you live through, you’ll disappear some day
If you keep spacing out, you’ll be swept away,
if you ain’t no got the guts, trust
It’ll all become yesterday
anyway so what’s the use?

-Tomorrow by BTS

The first thing that attracted me to BTS was their gorgeous lyrics. Tomorrow is a song that you can listen to many times and come up with different interpretations every single time.
This particular verse is my favourite. Everything will be past soon, so honestly what’s there in us left to try for? What are we even trying for?
My tomorrow will never come. Because there wasn’t a tomorrow to begin with anyhow.

Someone please hold me,
I’m exhausted from this world.
Someone please wipe me,
I’m drenched with tears.
Someone please notice my struggles first.
Please acknowledge the poor me.
Please help me

-Let Me Out by Jonghyun

There will come a time for every person, when they seem to be done with the world. I’ve seen people have it and it’s perhaps Jonghyun’s entire song collection that inspired me to start Continue Don’t Quit in the first place.
This song hits me every single time I hear it. I guess it has that effect on everyone though…

Other Lyrics Will Keep You Thinking For Long

Time passes like water flows
I’m building a dam called memories
There are memories that I couldn’t hold onto
It’s the reason why I look beyond the horizon again today

-Time And Fallen Leaves by AKMU

If Tomorrow reminds me that nothing matters, Time and Fallen Leaves reminds me that everything matters. AKMU very perfectly summarizes my feelings on memories. They exist to help me look forward. To help me live better. And to see the beauty in not only the trees that blossomed but also the leaves that fell.

I used to believe in you alone and I was happy
But like a joke, I am left alone
You used to promise me with your pinky finger
But in the end

Nothing ever lasts forever
In the end, you changed
There is no reason, no sincerity
Take away such a thing as love
Tonight, I’ll be crooked

Leave me alone
I was alone anyway
I have no one, everything is meaningless
Take away the sugar-coated comfort
Tonight, I’ll be crooked

-Crooked by GD

Jiyong-nim’s voice isn’t the only great thing about him. His lyrics for Big Bang and his solo compositions switch from thoughtful to crack to deep to soulful too quick and astoundingly well.
Crooked is a song that sounds like a happy song, a fun one even, but the lyrics are deep.
Most people consider Crooked to be a song about love failure, but somehow the first thing I thought of was family.
Perhaps it’s the death of a loved one, or maybe even just the parting, but these lyrics hit so much closer to home when you think of family more than just lovers.
Regardless of what he actually thought of when writing this song, there are several interpretations and the lyrics of Crooked will definitely leave you wanting for more.
Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you’re all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?
-Try by Colbie Caillat
I don’t listen to many English songs, but Try was a song that I had heard many many times. I don’t quite remember how or when I first heard this song, but the lyrics are direct and to the point.
In a way, this difference is what makes this somewhat an oddity on my list… I generally like lyrics that are more abstract but Try has lyrics that speak to you literally.
Don’t trap me inside walls
Where I can’t see, no
If you won’t have me, then let me go
I’m lost right now (I wait)
I’m in the same place (oh why)
Waiting for you to hold my hand
Eh eh
I’m tied to you (I wait)
I’m in the same place
Either untie me or pull me closer
Eh eh
Waitin’ all day
-I Wait by Day 6
What makes someone wait for you? Love? Hope?
I Wait by Day 6 is my favourite among their songs. It’s a catchy song and I love the way their voices sound in this. But more than that, I always come back to one thing in this song- how many people think about what the person who didn’t arrive feels? What about their guilt?
Despite the lyrics coming from a different perspective, this song always makes me think about the other party, the one that didn’t arrive.

Pass the tunnel of time
And when I open my closed eyes
It’s as if I wake from a short dream
And you appear as if it’s a lie

The moments that are stifling
Crush my pure heart
I’m losing consciousness
And although I lose everything of mine

I start walking myself again
I step on the forbidden line

Step and Step on me, it doesn’t matter if I’m trampled
If you’re the reason that I live

-Destroyer by Monsta X

This is definitely my personal favourite from Monsta X’s latest comeback. I don’t think there’s a need to explain these lyrics or even try. It’s beautiful in it’s own way and must be left to the reader’s own feelings. But I’ll just say that this song rang so true for me, I cannot even begin to explain it.

From the time of my birth
A taboo child
As a demon’s offspring
Though I didn’t deserve it
I received the punishment

There is nothing
To be sad about at all
But the small burn of sunset
Pulls on my hand

I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know anything
Neither the kindness after scolding
Nor the warmth after rain
But really, really, really, it’s really cold

-Six Trillion Years and An Overnight Story by IA (Vocaloid)

Vocaloid songs are sometimes very deep, but if I had to choose one dark and insanely pretty song, it’d be IA’s Six Trillion Year’s and an Overnight Story. It talks about a demon child and how he’s tortured, until a girl comes and teaches him happiness. The ending though is amazing.
I really suggest everyone listens to this song at least once, you’ll get to it again and again.

Lyric-less Songs Have Special Lyrics Called Memories

This instrumental will have a special place in my heart. It’s a song that always reminds me of my friend from Of Silences. Memories of the both of us are my lyrics for this song.

Poetry Is Wannabe Music

In The Name Of the Wind , Kvothe has an ardent hatred towards poetry. He holds it with the least regard and calls poets, ‘people who couldn’t do music’.
I don’t quite agree because some poets are amazing, but for my case, it’s very much true. Given a choice I’d like every one of my poems to be a song.

Like hating the sun, makes no real difference.
The sun will still rise and the sun will still set.
Just like life, not a choice of preference.
Like or dislike, the sun won’t fret.

-The Beauty Of Insignificance by Me

I hate the sun. But it doesn’t matter. This whole poem insults every one of my dislikes and even my older poetry (refer para 1)
Still, it is one of my best, or perhaps it is one of my best because.

For our story goes down a mute one, one of every single I’ve had.
And it’s with the worst guilt, that if I were to say I missed you,
I’d have to lie. A lie it would be if I tell you, “I missed you so bad.”
And I can’t help but wonder, if you feel the same too…

-Of Silences by Me

She was my best friend. Was. And I wonder why we became like this. Truthfully, all my friendships are mute one way or another, perhaps they’ll always be.
I didn’t miss her and I cannot even begin to express my guilt on this lack of feelings.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.

When Words Fail Us?

In the end, every one of our sentences is a connection between two people, between two dreams even.
Lyrics are just pretty manifests of our words, and like any words they hope to convey feelings and emotions.

But if one person refuses to listen or refuses to understand, then you are stranded, alone, on an island of unheard words.
When a person is unheard, that’s when words have failed them.

A million broken hearts, torn friendships, all because words have failed us. And as a hope, a wish, a fluttering wish, they become lyrics for songs. Or perhaps words in a poem. Essentially unheard by the one they were truly meant for.

Kvothe really did put it well as always.

For after all, what do any of us have left when words fail us?

  1. I knew GD was going to pop up on this list at some point. LOL But Jonghyun passing hit me, I’ve been follow him since Shinee debut and I agree. His solo work was kinda pointing towards this point. Sad stuff.

I also kinda have a love affair with lyrics. I love hearing someones story especially when it feels honest.

Poetry is music! Words have rhythm. The voice was the first instrumental known to man. Even if you want to put it in a tangible way. There is spoke word and they can have background instrumentation. I like to think of poetry as just another style.

    Nice job Auri

    1. Haha, No Kpop post without Jiyong-nim is complete XD
      True, it was a tragedy.

It’s a reason I like Kpop over many english songs (almost all of which I heard where about romance).

True, I guess that’s one way of looking at things….

      Thanks Lizz-san!

      1. When I got into Korean Music. I use to have wait weeks for English translations. LOL. I learned to get a gist based on feeling. Lyrics we’re never really a defining factor. But the funny thing. I was reeled into diving deeper in the Kpop genre because of a random English line that popped up in a song I came across. which is pretty random and the rest was history. I’m definitely more into english now. I only really listen to my favs.

  2. Such powerful lyrics and music always has a way to reach our heart. Thank you for the post it was so meaningful to read. Sometimes music has a way of bringing back some memories and help us overcome or deal with them in a way.
