Hey, Age Matters to Me! : Gakuen Alice

Recently I’ve stumbled across some great manga and I felt like I really needed to up my game and write about them. More like obsess about them, but…. hey. Same difference.
At the same time I have over 100 manga that I want to write about and I need to start ^^*
For today, I picked a prior read manga called Gakuen Alice.

Gakuen Alice?

STATUS: Completed
AUTHOR: Tachibana Higuchi
READING TIME: 25-30 hours
Gakuen Alice is a pretty old shoujo manga. It’s one of those first few manga that I’ve read, so I guess I really liked it at the time.

Ok, not really. I still like Gakuen Alice.

For Mikan, there was no better friend than Hotaru (though Hotaru sometimes seems to have other sentiments). They often played together. But Hotaru is a very special child, and she agrees to go to a school in Tokyo which the government reserved only for geniuses. This left a very lonely Mikan at home. When Hotaru fails to keep her promise and come home for holidays, her young friend is very disappointed and rather angry. But upon overhearing a conversation between Hotaru’s mother and a teacher, Mikan realizes that her friend’s reasons for leaving might not have been what they seemed. So Mikan takes it upon herself to run away and go to Hotaru’s school. There she discovers the so-called “genius academy” is actually a school for people gifted with special powers called “alices”. Her friend Hotaru is one of these, and after a chance encounter with a teacher, Mikan suddenly finds herself enrolled.

Gakuen Alice is a fantasy manga that touch on topics that include bullying, friendship, family, sacrifice and learning to say goodbye.

There are many elements of the story that hit close to home and all the characters are extremely adorable.

Gakuen Alice is actually a relatively famous manga/anime. Many people would have read/ watched it, so at least I’m spared the need to complain about how people aren’t giving it the attention it deserves.

Age Matters! It really does!

Like I mentioned, Gakuen Alice is a wonderful manga. The art style is good, it covers many genres.
“Hmm…”, you all must be going, “Auri sounds a little… like she’s lying… Hmm…”

So I was trying to save my complaint for the end, sue me. Hmph.

It’s just that all the characters are ten year olds.

The characters are ALL ten year olds.

The characters are all TEN YEAR OLDS.

Say what?!

I can’t believe this nonsense! A ten year old kid saved the world? A group of ten year olds went through THAT story line?!
What is WRONG with that author?!!!

Hey Auri, Just Because YOU Lived in a Protected Environment, Doesn’t Mean It’s Not Possible

Ok, fine. Let’s put away that plot and age issue for a while. Fine. That wasn’t even my main issue anyway.

Now there are two male characters of the story- Natsume and Luca. Both of them love Mikan.

Let’s all take a moment to process that.

A Ten Year Olds Love Triangle. Wh-Why would I want to watch ten year olds kissing? Wh-Why would ANYONE want to watch ten year olds kissing?

Who even thinks of love at ten?! And which ten year old who’s saving the goddamn WORLD would think about love?

When I was ten, all I cared about was chocolates, showing off my wounds, skating and bubblegum (not necessarily in that order)

And even before all that ‘love’, Natsume is infatuated with Mikan. Like-? Dude, can you even spell infatuated?

Hell, I’m SIXTEEN and I needed auto-correct to spell it!

So… Should You Read It?

Like I said, it’s a good story. THE AGES THOUGH!!!!

If you can pretend that the characters are fifteen or sixteen, then yeah, give it a try! It’s a pretty decent read otherwise.

FINAL SCORE: 8/10 ignoring ages.
4/10 counting ages

PICK IF: You got nothing to watch at the moment. (Not that bad)

> Plot
>Pretty Cute Art
>Alice Stones

Well, here’s another Pseudo-review to keep you entertained.
I’ve got some more serious projects lined up for the week, but also a 0.5 chapter and a special post soon.

Thank you for reading and have a great week ahead!

  1. I loved this anime!! I didn’t mind that they were 10 years old. It wasn’t a problem for me but they did act a lot older than they are. So that was a discrepancy. I think it would have been good if they were 12 or 15 too. Lately there has been a lot of new anime with younger kids.

It was a really cute anime. I watched it when I was a little over 10 though so maybe that’s why LOL. I’m not sure how I would feel about it if I were to watch it NOW at 21. Your post is so funny, Auri hahaha!

  2. I still remember adding it to my watch list but never watched it and now I am going to give it a try and after reading your review I remembered an anime which I watched before and its name is 12-sai.: Chicchana Mune no Tokimeki and I felt the same way as you felt regarding the age in this anime. The characters in this anime are 12 years old and falls in love with each other.

  3. Lolololl
I thought you were going to comment on age differences between characters but this was so unexpected! I agree, though, ten year olds can’t possibly experience romance lolol

  4. 😂😂😂 I wonder are these kids 10 year olds? 😂😂😂
Hmm, yeah I guess that age does matter at times. Well, this manga doesn’t really sound like my cup of tea anyways, so I will skip it. But still, this was a fun review to read. And wow, over 100 manga?!? That is a lot 😮😮

  5. I really enjoyed the anime, but I didn’t really like the manga as much because, well, their age really bothered me. I just can’t accept them feeling all those feelings at their age. I think I would’ve accepted it had they been at the very least 16 years old. Also, Mikan is so much a Mary Sue I hate– dislike her. Plus the ending sucks. But Hotaru is really one of the best elements of this series. And the alices and alice stones.

  6. Raging Auri is hilarious XD

When I was 10, I used to be cooped up in a corner and play games or draw because I had no friends…. And these kids are saving the planet AND are in a love triangle..

Well fantasy stuff isn’t my kinda thing and I don’t think I would like seeing 10 year olds getting much more action than me at that age (And even now). So I guess, I’ll pass.

Great review tho! I would love to see you rage more XD

    1. I feel like I should be offended, but feel flattered. I CAN be intimidating when I’m angry, ok? Don’t say I didn’t warn you Ryu-kun!!

I know! It makes no sense!

Another pass huh? Well, at least you got Aoharu?

You’re going to regret saying that Ryu-kun!

  7. Gauken Alice and Kodomo No Omocha, I read both of them as kids, like when I was 11 myself or something and even back then all I wondered was, that doesn’t happen, that can’t happen. This is beyond weird. Why are characters my age kissing, go play video games. :3

  8. 10 year olds kissing…ah, I don’t know whether to feel weird that they’re 10 and doing this or sad that they’re getting more action than me. lol. When I was ten I was busy being a huge tomboy and playing outside, so that is kind of weird, but the other stuff sounds interesting. I’ll have to check this out and just imagine them being older than 10.

  9. 😂😂 I love this review!!

Oh man, I recently this one recommended to me. The story sounds like something I’d love (minus the love triangle, I’m beyond tired of that). But really…10!? I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it. If I think about it like Cardcaptor Sakura, which I watched as a kid, maybe. But after watching The World is Still Beautiful…I dunno if I can handle another 10 year old romance. At least in this one the romance is between those of the same age….but still, 10?!? What is up with these writers and that age?!

    1. XD
      Glad you did~

Wow, there are a lot of too young romances huh? Well, I think it’s because the authors want us to feel their pain at young age as sympathy or something?
      I don’t even know Mani-san!
      I just… I give up.

  10. 10 years old?! Talk about precocious omg, I’ll never understand making love triangles or romance stories fully featuring prepubescent kids 💀
I’m too old to read about children in love nowadays tbh, it just feels off. But then I’m closer to 30 than to 20, so yeah i do think age matters and I’m not sure this manga is for me lmao
Thanks for writing about it and amusing us in the process with your pain 😹
