Why the maturity warning on manga sites must be revised.

I have been meaning to discuss this from quite a while, but was this thinking about how to phrase it delicately.

This is a bit contradictory topic and I’m not sure of my own thoughts myself! So I apologise if I offend anyone by any topic/ issue discussed here.
Also, I am not putting pictures to prove my point here (for obvious reasons) , so it might become a long…

My problem

I read manga from Taadd or MangaFox and recently both of them have undergone some maintenance which has invariably led to changes in the maturity level warning.

Generally, when I try accessing a manga not meant for under 18, this is what shows up-

The series XYZ contain intense violence, blood/gore,sexual content and/or strong language that may not be appropriate for underage viewers thus is blocked for their protection. So if you’re above the legal age of 18. Please click here to continue the reading.

Before, this used to come for a lot of the manga and I always appreciated it because, personally I have no interest in reading smut.

Agreed, I don’t mind skipping a couple of chapters if the story is particularly good, but these days they have removed the warning for eighty percent of manga that used to be on their list previously.

But who is to say what is mature and unsuitable and what is not? If this shows u for any manga with any amount of smut, how should I know whether or not it is original? Nothing in the sign tells us if the main element is smut or not?

Solution

Shouldn’t there be a different system in which they are rated or given different levels or something of that sort?
Something on the lines of scale of 5 maybe?
Even the categories must be arranged in order. You CANNOT be given School Life first and then Mature for some manga! It just isn’t done!

How it should work

Let me give you the following examples-

  1. Love Celeb (Smut scale: 4.8/5!)
The description tells you nothing. No warning sign has been shown. The categories are given like this- Comedy first, Drama second, Romance third and then Smut.

The reason I bothered reading this one was because the reviews on yahoo! said it was interesting and had to do with acting. I was thinking on the lines of Skip Beat! or Glass Mask- but OH! WAS I WRONG OR WHAT?!!!
They do so many adult things here that I wish I could wash my eyes with toilet cleaner! GODS!
The categories should go in this order- Smut first, Smut second and Smut third!!!!!
    GEEZ!!!

  2. Love Monster (Scale: 5/5)

Do you even see Smut or Mature there? I don’t. At least Love Celeb WARNED me there would be smut!
Disgusting! What he did is sexual abuse not love!!

    UWASA NO MIDORI-KUN!! Manga Summary
Midori Yamate is a 15 year-old girl and is very much a tomboy. When she was young, Midori meets a boy called Tsukasa Hino, who came to the island she lives on for a holiday. He teaches her to play soccer and she falls in love with the sport. Midori is inspired by Tsukasa and continues to play soccer in hopes that they would meet again someday. When they do meet again Tsukasa does something unforgivable. Determined to defeat Tsukasa on the soccer field Midori enrolls in an all boy high school.
Agreed. There wasn’t much of bad content in this one. But it came to me under recommendation of girl’s football.
What did I ever do wrong in my life? All I wanted was to read a manga where a girl plays football!!! Not this kissing spree!
I mean – come on! Tsukasa violated Midori for god’s sake! How does she love him!!!????

There are several others with terrible stuff but without the underage sign! They must definitely be revised!!!!!
They include: Kindan Wedding, HoneyxHoney Drops, etc.

I have gone a couple of chapters into all these and stopped, regretting that I ever follow recommendations from the internet.
I plead all of you manga lovers there to give a detailed recommendation with appropriate warnings and age suitable materials.

I know that the level and choices vary from person to person. I, for one, don’t mind kisses, but not forever and nothing more than that thank you very much, I am so not interested.

Still, as far as giving solutions, I have found only one- Revise these warnings and hopefully give some info as to what to expect.
100% Perfect Girl, for example has excessive nudity but crazy humour as well. I managed to ignore this until the comedy lasted and then good bye to it too!

Thanks again for reading and feel free to express your opinions and give plausible suggestions for the same. Sorry for the little rant!

  1. I don’t think it needs a rating system, just a blatant warning like books get.
“Warning: non-con, graphic sex, nudity.” Are what usually are in books in websites and goodreads, and mangas should definitely have them. I don’t mind and like from porn to smut to fluff, but they still should give a heads up to all readers.
Maybe try checking the mangas on other websites, or you know, first go on MangaUpdates to see the tags there. They tag everything properly, so you can’t miss!

  2. Good points here! 🙂 I agree, a lot of manga needs to be classed differently. Or if it’s given a certain rating, then they should perhaps say why this is. Instead of stating ‘This series may contain violence/ sexualised situations etc’, I think it would be helpful if they actually said what it contained, ike if it was solely sex or jjust violence etc.
I have no problems with smut or violence in my manga, but I know a lot of people who are perfectly happy to read mature manga full of sexual situations, but who stop reading if they are full of violence, or vice versa. If people knew exactly what sort of mature content they were about to see, then it would probably make it much easier for people to find manga they like :O
